Ignatian prayer

An Ignatian
Prayer....

Lord, teach me to be
generous.
Teach me to serve you as you deserve,
to give and not to count
the cost,
to fight and not to heed the wounds,
to toil and not to seek
rest,
to labor and not to ask for reward,
save that of knowing that I do
your will.

Black sky

Black sky hung through the leaves
dangling from the tree like a velvet sweater

                           on a balmy night.

I dared to query God
sensing silence under the moon’s shadow

                          my prayer took flight.

Breaking through the still air
frogs shared a melody; crickets laughed at

distant dogs howling.

I accepted such song
which seemed so wise a response to my heart

                      while silent stars smiled.
